POTOMAC, MARYLAND

The History of Potomac, Maryland

Located moments from the Nation’s Capital, Potomac, Maryland stands as one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most enviable addresses.

Originally an Algonquin settlement, the land that stands as Potomac, Maryland today was part of a larger colonial settlement which began in the early 1700s as a farming and agricultural community and then transformed into an important trading post when the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal finally reached it in the mid-1800s.

Largely spared from the devastation of the Civil War, Potomac, Maryland maintained its rustic and pastoral setting well into the 1900s, and was largely known as Maryland’s premier Hunt Country, catering to the tastes of the region’s well to do.

Then, following World War II, residential and commercial development began in earnest to cater to the Mid-Atlantic’s growing demand for housing and suburban living.

Today, Potomac, Maryland maintains its rustic roots with sprawling farms and manor style homes, while also catering to the needs and necessities of daily living in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
