The Guide to Living in Williamsburg, Virginia

A historic Virginia city with Colonial heritage and water views

WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA

The History of Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1632 and established as the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699. It played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, being the location of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. After Virginia's capital moved to Richmond in 1780, Williamsburg began to decline in political importance.

Throughout the 19th century, Williamsburg remained a small town with little growth, until the restoration efforts of the early 20th century revitalized interest in its historical significance. In 1926, the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg began, transforming the city into a living history museum.

Today, Williamsburg is a modern city that carefully balances its historical roots with a thriving tourism industry. It is home to William & Mary, the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Williamsburg attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience its rich colonial history and beautifully preserved architecture.
