Property Description

Located on an idyllic parcel steps from Lake Thoreau, this original 1970s contemporary home in Reston, Virginia showcases the benefits of the whole home transformation.

A collaboration between award-winning residential architecture firm Rill Architects, Lauren Liess Interiors, Woodhaven Contractors, and acclaimed landscape architecture firm Fine Landscapes, activating indoor-outdoor living and a schoolhouse-industrial look emerged as key priorities for the renovation.

Inside, raw structural components, organic materials, and a muted color palette give a warm and inviting feel and enhance the home’s connection to nature.

Windows by Windsor Windows replaced the walls along the home’s staircase to create a tower effect seen from the entry and open main floor, while a third set of sliding glass doors by Wester Window Systems create a seamless access point to the outside deck. Steel I beams supporting the exposed loft above the living room remained and roof rafters in the space were stained and treated as design elements.

Utilitarian-style lighting and fixtures blend with wood and stone throughout, especially noticeable in the expanded kitchen. Now open to the living and dining rooms, the kitchen features wood and soapstone counters, dark cabinetry accented by light wood open shelving and upper cabinets, and a wall of white ceramic tiles with dark grout.

In the upper level primary suite, square footage was claimed from the balcony, which was replaced with a streamlined deck, while a slanted wood ceiling, adjoining black and white bathroom with a soaking tub, steam shower, and custom white oak vanities complete a vision of organic luxury.
